Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) activation –

In other words, OEMs sale the computer along with the standards required for the windows vista or windows server 2008 operating systems and activate windows before selling the computer to the customer.

Retail activation-

Enables the activation of windows by using the product activation key that is provided to a customer while purchasing windows vista or windows server 2008 from a software retailer. The product activation key, which is provided on the package of the product is used for windows activation that you can perform retail activation by either telephone or an online process.

Volume activation-

Provides the following methods to activate windows:

• Multiple activation key (MAK)
• The key management Service (KMS) key

Using Multiple Activation key-

MAK PROXY ACTIVATION– Allows the MAK proxy computer to collect activation information from the other computers on the network. A centralised activation request for this information is then sent by the MAK proxy computer to microsoft. Volume activation management tool (VAMT) configure MAK proxy activation and connects the MAK proxy computer with the isolated computers on the network. VAMT also collect the installation ID, which are saved in an extensible markup language (XML) file. An activation request based on the these IDS is sent to Microsoft by the MAK proxy computer that finally, the confirmation IDs CID are obtained for these IDs, which are then used to activate windows on the isolated computers.

Using using the key management Service (KMS) key-

KMS is a method used to activate volume licensing editions of windows Vista and windows server 2008. The KMS activation method is generally used for medium to large networks. The implementation of the KMS activation method in a network requires at least five physical client computers to activate windows server 2008 and at least 25 client computer to activate windows Vista. The minimum number of kms client required is known as threshold.

You can use kms by installing the KMS key on a computer that the computer on which the KMS key is installed is known as the kms host dot after installing the KMS key, the KMS host performs a one time activation with Microsoft.
